Industry Firewall Security Terms
Stateful Firewall – Firewall technology that tracks connections from trusted users and only allows connectivity that is requested by the trusted users or devices.
Application Firewall – Sometimes referred as ‘Application Control’ or ‘Layer 7 Firewall’, this basic functionality detects the application being used (i.e facebook, twitter, youtube) and can either log, block, or perform QoS on a per-session basis.
Gateway Antivirus – Antivirus and Antimalware threat protection provided by the gateway appliance (Firewall typically), rather than endpoint protection which is installed on the device.
Hosted Firewall – A firewall solution that is provided at the ISP data center. This type of solution has the added benefit of stopping DDoS attacks, malware, etc. before the Internet connection is saturated with malicious traffic. Hosted Firewall is also inherently fault tolerant and scalable which makes it a preferred solution over an on-premise hardware appliance.
Cloud Firewall - A cloud firewall is a type of Hosted Firewall that resides in the Cloud, but is not hosted or provided by the ISP. A cloud firewall requires endpoint devices to have an application installed to intercept and redirect internet traffic to the cloud firewall. A gateway NAT device is still required on-premise. This type of solution has the flexibility of allowing devices to be mobile, at the cost of additional configuration and management.
